Our Teachers

We believe that everyone can do Yoga and our highly trained team of teachers makes it possible to welcome everyone.

Frances our Founder/Director, has studied with BKS Iyengar in Pune over decades and other teachers have also been on courses there. We have a wonderful admin team and work together to make the Centre the special place it is.

We look forward to meeting you in person here...

Frances Homewood, Founder & Director

Frances discovered Iyengar yoga in her late teens and has practiced ever since. She has been an Iyengar yoga teacher for over 30 years and first went to India in 1987 to study with BKS Iyengar at his Institute in Pune. She has made many return visits and gained her Senior Intermediate ( Level 3 ) certificate in 2012.

After a knee injury, she became interested in therapeutic yoga and began to assist in medical classes in Pune. This motivated her to set up a fully equipped Yoga Centre where such classes could be held.

Frances is a teacher trainer and assessor for the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK) and has trained most of the teachers who work at the Centre.

Frances teachers Tuesday Level 2 blended class, and Wednesday Level 3 blended class. She has taught therapy classes since 2010 and now mentors other teachers to assist in these classes.

Why do you like teaching at the Centre?

I like that it is a dedicated Iyengar yoga centre, that all the teachers are trained in the same system to the same standards, and so offering consistently high standards. I like the teaching community whereby many of the members visit Pune regularly and as so disseminate the current teachings directly from the Iyengar family, ensuring the continuity of the lineage.

I trained in Manchester with Marion Kilburn 2005 - 2007.

Why do you like teaching at the Centre?

I like teaching at the Centre because it is the perfect space for yoga. It is an oasis of calm. It also has all the equipment on hand and puts on workshops with national and international teachers. Most importantly, it is a privilege to be part of the yoga community there - the students, teachers and those who work there all contribute to this special place.

What classes do you teach at the Centre?

I have recently started teaching a new Tuesday evening Level 1 class.

What year did you qualify & what level certificate do you have?

I qualified in October 2010 and am a Level 1 teacher.

Where did you train and with whom?

I trained in the North East with the amazing Margaret Austin who is such an inspiring teacher. I moved to Sheffield, in August 2010, shortly before taking my teaching assessment in the October of that year, so I was also supported by Frances here at the Centre, in the final weeks run up to my assessment.

Why do you like teaching at the Centre?

The Centre is fantastic! In the North East, we didn't have a Centre, the teachers just rent school halls, community halls etc so students all have their own equipment and carry them around to classes. So when I arrived in Sheffield and came to the Centre with all the equipment and beautiful studios I thought it was amazing! It's great as a teacher because you can do so much more with students when you aren't limited in equipment. The Centre also has a wonderful community feel and everyone is so supportive of each other. I felt welcomed immediately and now feel a real part of the Centre and Iyengar yoga in Sheffield.

I teach Level 1 blended class on Monday evenings at 6pm, Level 1/Restorative In-Centre class on Tuesday mornings at 10am and Level 2 blended class on Friday mornings at 9:45am.

What year did you qualify & what level certificate do you have?

    October 2012, Level 1.

Where did you train and with whom?

At Edinburgh Iyengar Yoga Centre with Elaine Pigeon, Meg Laing and George Glen, and at Manchester and District Institute of Iyengar Yoga with Trisha Booth, Marion Kilburn and Julie Brown. I was very lucky to have the input of so many amazing senior teachers!

Why do you like teaching at the Centre?

I love observing the transformative potential of yoga in action as students progress, and I very much enjoy the rapport which builds up between me and my students over time. At Sheffield Iyengar Yoga Centre we have a wonderfully calm, peaceful and well-equipped space which allows all this to happen. I love the atmosphere in classes at the centre, from the determined effort of students as they work in their postures to the peace which comes as they rest in Savasana. Mainly, I am deeply nourished by the opportunity to share this practice which has brought so much to my life.

I teach the Level 1 class on Mondays at 7.30pm.

What year did you qualify & what level certificate do you have?

Why do you like teaching at the Centre?

I first attended the centre as a student when it opened in 2005, so for me it's a real privilege to now be a teacher here. I feel that the centre is my 'Yoga home', not only because it's such a beautiful space but because of the feeling of community here between teachers and students. I love that I can attend the centre as a student and continue my yoga journey in the Level 3 class. And that I can pass on all of the fantastic teaching that I have experienced over the years to my own students.
