About Us

Sheffield Iyengar Yoga Centre is situated in the heart of Walkley, Sheffield in an old converted chapel opposite Ruskin Park. It is a calm and tranquil space full of natural light and views of nature.

We teach the Iyengar method of yoga both in-person and online. Iyengar yoga is a traditional, authentic form of yoga that strengthens and stretches the body and eases the mind.

More than a yoga class, we are a community, welcoming to all.

We can look after injuries, stiffness or limitations so that yoga can benefit you.

In 2005 Frances got the keys to a run-down old chapel in Walkley. Weeks of renovations followed, with the help of friends and family.

In June of that year, Sheffield’s first Iyengar yoga Centre was opened to the public. History was made and now the Centre is home to a dedicated community of students and teachers alike.

Many memories are etched into the walls of this very special building, which acts as a place of quiet sanctuary in the heart of Walkley.

Iyengar teacher training is unique in that it requires three years of practice before entering into a mentor programme for a further three years.

Each teacher has a minimum of six years experience, so you can feel assured that you will get the best support in any of our classes.

We can look after injuries, stiffness or limitations so that you can experience the benefits of yoga.

Our founder, Frances, started her yoga journey at a young age following a fated introduction to a teacher who was one of the very first people trained by BKS Iyengar himself.

She soon became a dedicated student and sought out classes in each new place she lived; although this was a hard task in a time where yoga was not easily accessible.

After years of practicing Frances embarked on teacher training and has been fortunate enough to have spent months learning at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India. She has been taught directly by members of the Iyengar family, as well as Guruji himself.

Iyengar yoga is a precise and disciplined tradition that uses equipment such as ropes, blocks and specially designed wooden props to help students of all abilities achieve yoga poses with ease.

Frances knew that to share the benefits of Iyengar yoga she needed a dedicated space. The Centre has two beautiful, fully equipped halls in which a number of different classes take place.

Here at Sheffield Iyengar Yoga Centre you are supported by our expert teachers to guide you through your yoga journey.

"I have been taking classes at the centre for 5 years and I absolutely love it! The quality of teaching is of very high standard, and teachers are incredibly knowledgeable, supportive and understanding. There are classes for all levels and the approach to yoga used at the centre is suitable for everyone, irrespective of age or level of fitness. Last but not least, the centre itself is a peaceful place, with the most relaxed and positive atmosphere. I would highly recommend Sheffield Yoga Centre, without hesitation!"
