We are very much looking forward to welcoming Firooza Ali back to the centre in October for her annual weekend of workshops. This year there is a very exciting addition to the programme as Firooza will be giving a talk at the centre as part of the “Off the Shelf” Literature Festival.

Entitled “Stilling the Restless Mind – the Path of Yoga”, Firooza’s talk will celebrate the republishing of “Light on Yoga” by BKS Iyengar, the book which no yogi can do without!

Firooza has spent many years under the direct guidance of Guruji BKS Iyengar and is a yoga teacher and college philosophy lecturer. Her talks always pull from this wide experience to provide inspiration and insight into the deep topic of yoga.

Some of you may be aware that our director, Frances Homewood, has been teaching Iyengar Yoga to footballers at Sheffield United Football Club. Classes started with young players from the Academy and the First Team have also had sessions which have proved very successful!

Frances’ work with the team was featured in the match programme on Tuesday 23rd April. The match was attended by 23,000 people!

Great news for the centre and let’s hope the footballers inspire many more to come along and find out more about the benefits of yoga!

Back in January, Sheffield United Football Academy approached our director and senior teacher, Frances Homewood, to find out more about the centre and how yoga could help their young players prevent injury.

Other clubs, such as Manchester United, have found Iyengar yoga very helpful in reducing injuries and improving the performance of their players and the Academy wanted to offer this to their own players having heard about the centre and the range of classes we provide. Since January, the 16-18 year old players plus their coaches and physios have been attending classes specially tailored to them.

Below are some great photos from the first session:

The class begins with a few moments sitting quietly

Another Tree Pose!

We are delighted to announce a new partnership with Sheffield United Football Club Academy.
From Monday 28th January the 16-18 year old players plus their coaches and physios will attend classes tailored to them at the Centre. Senior teacher Frances Homewood will take the classes. Further sessions will take place at the Academy itself. The Academy approached the Centre having seen the range of classes provided. Other clubs such as Manchester United have found Iyengar yoga very helpful in reducing injuries and improving the performance of their players.

We hope this will see the start of a blossoming relationship between the centre and sports clubs within Sheffield, as more people begin to learn about the benefits of yoga!

We are very pleased to announce that Sheffield Yoga Centre Director, Frances Homewood, passed her Senior Intermediate (Level 1) teaching certificate earlier this month!

This is very exciting news for the centre as it means we will be able to offer even more varied and specialist workshops in the future.

Frances’ teaching has inspired numerous students here at the centre and we are delighted to congratulate her on this latest achievement.

Frances will be teaching December’s ‘First Saturday’ workshop on Saturday 1st and there are still places left! For more information or to download a booking form please visit the events page.

Earlier this month Frances (Yoga Centre Director) was asked to attend an annual conference for trainee GP’s where she ran a short ‘Introduction to Iyengar Yoga’ session.

This was a great opportunity to promote the benefits of yoga to future GP’s and we hope that the experience will encourage them to recommend Iyengar Yoga to patients as a method of improving health and well-being.

The session received excellent feedback from those who took part and participants recognised that “yoga will be an excellent way to improve health, relaxation and general wellbeing for hard-working GPs”. So we hope that they will pass this message on to colleagues as well as patients as they move through their training!

Our annual social took place on Saturday 2nd June and was, as ever, a great success!

This years event was made particularly special as we were joined by special guest, Zubin Zarthoshtimanesh, who was visiting the UK from India to teach both in Sheffield and at the National Convention. We were very pleased that Zubin was able to join us for this special Indian themed evening, which aimed to raise funds for Calcutta Rescue.

We were also joined by Diana Bayliss who performed a wonderful show with her Kathputli marionettes and had a chance to watch (and try!) the enchanting dancing of the earthKALA – Meaningful Art dance troupe! Guests were also able to dress up in traditional Indian dress and sample some delicious homemade food.

Everyone had a fantastic time and the evening raised £800 for Calcutta Rescue! So thank you to everyone who helped out and came along and here’s to another successful event next year!

As the cold, winter nights draw in we often appreciate our yoga even more. We can go to class or practice even without daylight or good weather. As I write this, however, I am preparing for the heat and sun of India! I am lucky enough to again have a place in classes at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, home of the world wide community that is Iyengar yoga. Our Guruji BKS Iyengar will be there and we will be celebrating his 93rd birthday with him on 14th December. Students and teachers will come from all over the world for this occasion.

Our gift is a lovely card, hand made by Katie Owens and large enough to take many messages of appreciation from Sheffield Yoga Centre. If you would like to sign it, ask your teacher. He will read and enjoy it I know.

Namaste,

Frances

A few of us were fortunate to hear Firooza Ali’s excellent and accessible talk on Yoga Philosophy when she was over from India in September. One of our students, Mike Sullivan-Lozano recorded it and has offered to send out copies in CD on DVD format to anyone who would like a copy. If you would like a copy, please contact Mike directly by emailing msullivanlozano@mac.com. There will be a small charge to cover postage and packing.
